Arts & Crafts for TK-K | Foundation Year | Ages 5–6

Our Foundation Year introduces young children to art through exploration, imagination, and hands-on making. At this age, the goal is not to create a “perfect” finished project, but to help children become confident creators.

Students experiment with drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and construction while exploring color, shape, texture, pattern, and form. They learn to use different art materials and tools, strengthen fine motor skills, and begin developing spatial and 3-dimensional thinking.

Students are encouraged to make their own choices, develop ideas, solve simple creative problems, and discover that there can be many different solutions to the same artistic challenge.

The Foundation Year prepares students for the next stage of the Art Backyard program: Art & Architecture I.

Art & Architecture I, ll | Ages 6–8, 8-10

Art & Architecture I is the second year after foundation. Students explore art, architecture, and design through drawing, painting, sculpture, model-making, and 3-dimensional construction.

Projects introduce children to artists, architects, famous buildings, basic architectural concepts, and different ways people design and build. Students work with a variety of traditional and recycled materials while developing spatial thinking, observation, problem-solving, and creative decision-making.

Rather than copying a teacher’s sample, students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and find individual solutions. The emphasis is on learning how to think like an artist and designer, not simply how to reproduce an artwork.

Art & Architecture II takes students beyond the foundations and introduces a deeper exploration of art, architecture, culture, and design.

Through our Around the World curriculum and other thematic projects, students discover how artists and architects respond to geography, history, culture, materials, and the needs of the people who use their spaces. They may explore traditional houses, famous buildings, cities, interiors, engineering concepts, and works of art from different parts of the world.

Students work in both two and three dimensions and learn to plan, sketch, build, revise, and add increasingly thoughtful details to their work. Projects develop artistic skills alongside spatial reasoning, research, problem-solving, independence, and creative thinking. At this level, art becomes more than making an art project - it becomes a way to understand the world and communicate ideas.

Fine Arts | Ages 8-12

Our Fine Arts program is designed for students who are ready to develop stronger technical skills while continuing to think independently and creatively.

Students explore drawing, painting, composition, color theory, perspective, observational drawing, mixed media, sculpture, and art history.

As students mature, more attention is given to technique, observation, proportion, value, color, and composition but technical skill is never taught simply for the purpose of copying. Students learn how to use these skills to communicate their own ideas and develop an individual artistic voice.

The goal is to develop students who are not only technically stronger, but also independent, thoughtful, and confident young artists.

OCSA Prep & Portfolio Preparation for 5-6 graders (4 or 5 classes per 1 month, 1.5 hours each)

$200.00 every month

Our Portfolio Preparation program is designed for students who are preparing to apply to OCSA (Visual Arts or Production & Design) or other competitive visual arts and design programs.

Students will work on the fundamental skills needed to create a thoughtful and well-rounded portfolio, including observational drawing, composition, perspective, proportion, value, color, creative thinking, and visual communication.

Classes include both skill-building exercises and longer individual projects. Students learn to develop an idea from initial sketches through experimentation and revision to a finished piece, while working with a variety of materials and techniques.

A strong portfolio should demonstrate more than technical ability. It should show curiosity, original thinking, personal interests, experimentation, and the student’s individual artistic voice. For this reason, students are guided in developing their own work rather than reproducing identical teacher-directed projects. Portfolio preparation is individualized according to each student’s age, goals, strengths, and the requirements of the program to which they are applying.
